When you or I say something that isn’t true, it’s called “intentional misrepresentation of fact“.

When Krisna Saravanamuttu says something that isn’t true, it’s called a Thursday.

Would the real Andrew Lerner please stand up?

Would the real Andrew Lerner please stand up?

Andrew S. Lerner does not exist.

Andrew is a fake person. “He” set up his facebook account a few days ago and tried to add me and some of my friends. He has a whopping 15 friends, and he claims to be a York Forward supporter who is coming to York in September.

Now “he” is trying to make unprovoked, racially insensitive comments on the York Forward and Drop YFS facebook groups that will serve to demonize a caricature of the “anti-YFS” student.

This is a tactic that was used widely by the YFS in the last impeachment campaign and election. They disseminate inflammatory information, such as statements supposedly said by members of Drop YFS, or members of York Forward.

In this way, the YFS galvanizes their potential supporters, because the YFS leads them to believe that rather than fighting against a group of students who want to impeach their student government, they are fighting against a group of Conservanazi racists, personally employed by Stephen Harper to victimize minorities on campus.

They used this same tactic in February, when they published a “hit list” with the names of “Drop YFS organizers” (some of the people on the list had little to nothing to do with organizing Drop YFS).

On the list, they published fabricated statements that their targets had supposedly said, almost all of them racist and outrageous.

Also, they included blatant lies (ie: Ted Bethune is a member of the Conservative Party) and irrelevant factoids (ie: Ted Bethune grew up in Stephen Harper’s riding).

And now our friends over at the YFS MiniTrue have invented their own Emmanuel Goldstein to remind us why we need the party!

So let the 2 minutes of hate begin!

While the YFS accuses others on campus of ratcheting up racial tensions, let’s take a look at what Andrew S. Lerner has to say on the subject:

I hear YSF is full of Muslams and Tamils and other undesirable terrorsits scum…we gotta take back one campus at a time!

I fucking hate muslims so much right now…I hear York has lots of those sick people? Lots to lookk forward too

– From the York Forward discussion board

He also joined such inflammatory facebook groups as “Africa fucking sucks”

And…. Cue the desired reaction… now!

Racists! They’re a Zionist Conspiracy! A Conservative ploy to take over student governments! Union Bashing scum, the lot of them!

I want this school to realize that we stand on the edge of oblivion.

I want every man, woman and child to understand how close we are to chaos.

I want everyone to remember WHY THEY NEED US!

It just doesn’t have that nice ring to it that other “gates” do.

Perhaps that’s why, despite no discernible strategy, savvy political maneuvering, or even common sense, Krisna Saravanamuttu has survived scandal after scandal.

Known to his many political enemies on campus as “K-Dawg”, “The Patron Saint of Stupidity”, or simply “Holy Crap, isn’t that the guy who led a racist riot against a minority group and somehow still has his job”, Krisna has been widely criticized for being a staunch anti-Zionist and showing it by accusing all of his enemies of being part of a Zionist Conspiracy (think protocols).

In his short 13 months in the public eye, Krisna and friends have managed to piss off just about every sane person on campus.

But though much has been said on Krisna Saravanamuttu the legend, I want to speak about Krisna Saravanamuttu the man.

Behind those deep, baby brown eyes, an amazing thing occurs every day.

Just the sheer amount of  energy required to power the massive quantity of “double-think” that must fly carelessly through that big ol’ brain of his is astounding.

For example, allow me to introduce to you Saravanamuttu the instigator:

I was present at the Hillel lounge when Krisna led a mob of students in what was most certainly a violent demonstration. (That’s me in the black coat being pushed around). While the entire event wasn’t caught on film, the tone of hatred is certainly discernable. Perhaps the worst that Krisna did was lead a mob of angry students to the Jewish student lounge (because apparently that’s an appropriate response to students criticizing their student government), but he certainly didn’t bat an eye when death threats were uttered, or blatantly Anti-semetic chants uttered.

As Michael Payton, York’s eternal voice of reason, and friend of mine wrote, “[his] actions [were] more shameful than shame can ever communicate. They [were] more disgusting than disgust can ever reach.”

After York University fined and sanctioned Krisna for his hateful behaviour, the YFS released a press release claiming that his riotous band of merry men and women were attempting to fight racism on campus.

Fine. Fuck it. I’ll bite. You barricaded my Jewish friends and me in a room because somewhere, someone made racist comments.

Just so we’re all clear, it is perfectly acceptable to concentrate a minority against their will, cover your face with a kaffiyah scarf, bang on the glass doors of their office while chanting “break the glass, get them out”, and generally terrorize them to the point where police must be called to escort them off campus.

It has always been acceptable.

But wait, there’s more!

In case your brain hasn’t been raped thoroughly enough, a few days ago, our comrades at MiniTrue came out with yet another press release.

Allow me to introduce to you Krisna the concerned humanitarian:

“Today, an anti-Semitic attack occurred on the office of the Jewish student association-Hillel in York’s Student Centre. “University campuses are places of learning and must be free from all forms of hate, including anti-Semitism,” said Krisna Saravanamuttu, President of the York Federation of Students. “Violent acts of hatred such as these are an affront student rights on campus and must be condemned.”

Oceania is at war with Eurasia.

Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.

A Tale of Two CUPEs

July 4, 2009

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

It was the best of times to be  an up-and-coming CUPE executive, ambitiously attempting to hold both a city and her largest university hostage in one year.

It was the worst of times to be caught in the crossfire.

Before I spin this tale of woe (and promptly hereafter drop the Dickensian tone), let me first say that I am a firm believer in the right to organize. In my time at York University this year, there have been those who have tried to paint me as a union-basher. They are, mind you, the same people who insist that Canada is a filthy imperialist power beneath their contempt, anyone even slightly right of the NDP is a fascist, and military recruitement on campus is a war crime.

My intention is not to question the validity of unions, but rather to simply shed some light on the damage that can be caused by labour disputes.

Which brings me to our “Tale of Two CUPEs”. This is a true story, with only the name of our heroine changed.

For the purposes of this story, we’ll call her Katherine Pryde. (Yes, I know I’m a huge nerd, but I couldn’t think of a name and I’m staring at a pile of X-Men comics).

Katherine began this year, fresh out of her Toronto high-school, as a bright-eyed finance major at York University. She made tons of new friends, loved every minute of her classes, and joined a few student clubs. September and October flew by, consumed by mid-terms and nights at the campus pub.

But remember, remember the 6th of November. CUPE 3903 walked off the job, leaving almost 50,000 students locked out of the classroom, including Katherine.

“No matter,” Katherine mused, “we’ll be back in class in a matter of days”.

Days turned to weeks.

Weeks turned to months.

Exam season passed without a page turned. 2008 melted into 2009 and still, there was no end in sight.

Students began to gossip about the possible ramifications. Would they lose the year? What about exchange students, and people renting homes in the Student Village?

It would be 3 months before the Mcguinty government ordered CUPE 3903 back to work and classes resumed.  In that time, CUPE Ontario’s Syd Ryan would call for a boycott of Israeli Academics on Ontario Campuses.
For Katherine, a Jewish student, this call would contribute to the already palpable Anti-Israel, and at times Anti-Semetic atmosphere at York.

In early February, Katherine finally made it back into the classroom. Despite the syllabusses being compressed to accomodate a short year, reading week being cancelled, and a slew of well-chronicled Anti-Semetic incidents, including a CUPE-sponsored newspaper releasing offensive holocaust cartoons on holocaust rememberance day, Katherine finally finished her year in June.

Unfortunately, as hundreds of thousands of other students returned home in early May, Katherine would neither be able to find a job, nor an internship, in her area of study.

With the summer fast approaching, and the promise of another’s year tuition looming, Katherine knew that she needed to find employment.

She decided to take up employment at a City of Toronto summer camp at which she had worked in past years.

Unfortunately, just hours before pre-camp training was meant to start, another division of CUPE, this time the one that Katherine’s camp was part of, decided to go on strike.

Today, Katherine can be found every morning at 7 AM, reluctantly picketing to collect whatever meager salary she can. Who knows how her tuition will be paid, her rent accounted for, her textbooks purchased?

It would be a really funny story, if only it wasn’t true.
